Web Survey Shows Significant Growth of the Web

In its December 2007 survey Netcraft reported it received responses from 155,230,051 sites. The web analytics company says it is an increase of 5.4 million sites since November, which shows strong growth. The WWW grew by 50 million websites for 2007.

The highest growth that web has eve seen was an increase of 30 million websites. That was in 2006. In percentage, the WWW has grown by 48% since December 2006. This however remains far less than the 160% growth from 2000.

Strong Growth in the Traditional Hosting

The growth in the traditional web hosting market continues to be strong. The most dynamic development is visible on the blogging field. 2007 was the year of ever larger number of websites base on various blogging platforms.

Only the top 3 largest blogging web networks MySpace, Live Spaces, and Blogger host around 25 million websites. Netcraft also says that Microsoft and Google also attracted a large number of users by integrating a wide range of services such as search, online collaboration, blogging and electronic mail.

There is also an impressive growth in the number of active websites. It accounts to 19 million new active websites since December 2006. This is an annual growth of 38%.

Server Market

Netcraft’s Estimate for servers from August 1995 - December 2007 shows that Apache has 49.57% market share, followed by Microsoft with 35,76%, Google - 5.51%, Lighttpd with 0.98% and sun - 0.38% market share.

Netcrafts survey shows that most reliable hosts in November 2007 is Hurricane Electric, closely followed by Seeweb, 3FN, Canada Web Hosting and Rackspace.
